Bernie's second chance

Bernie was one of the many innocent victims of the Paradise Camp Fire. As the flames closed in, he had no choice but to run straight through them to survive. By the time we met him, his whiskers were singed clean off, and it was clear the fire had left him deeply shaken.

Fieldhaven reached out to us afterward, asking if we could take in Bernie and a couple of other feral cats displaced by the fire. Of course, we said yes. The three cats came to live in our Zoe McCrea Feline Sanctuary, where they'd have space, safety, and time to heal.

Bernie was cautious at first, understandably so. It took a while for him to trust that he was somewhere safe, and even longer before he'd let anyone get close. Our volunteers were patient with him, visiting often and letting him set the pace. Slowly, Bernie started coming out of his shell. Today, he happily accepts pets from the familiar faces he's grown to trust.

He's also formed a close bond with another cat from the Camp Fire, and the two of them are inseparable. Together, they've settled into a pampered life at the sanctuary, far from the fire that once threatened to take everything from them. Bernie may always carry the memory of that day, but he's found something just as lasting: safety, companionship, and a home.
